Revealing emoji–Cambridge students vent their feelings

Emoji have become an integral part of our highly digital social life. Almost every message on social media is invariably accompanied by an emoji. People have gone crazy about choosing countless number of emojis to express their varied moods and emotions. They range from cartoon faces to stomping flamenco dancers to applauding hands. Plain sentences are a thing of the past. They are thought to be crude and coarse. There is a race to make one’s message stand out from the rest. There are no takers for ‘Hey, how are you?’ unless it is emojised with a round circle smiling at you. In a Zoom session held on August 6, our Cambridge students were given an opportunity to choose an emoji befitting their personality and justifying their choice in a sentence.
